We're stonemasons working in and around Athboy on older limestone walls, farm boundaries and period buildings, using lime-mortar repointing and traditional methods. Free site visits.
Athboy is a small historic Meath town near the Hill of Ward, and a lot of the stonework around here is older limestone: town buildings, churchyard and boundary walls, and plenty of farm walls out in the surrounding countryside. Much of it was built with lime mortar, so when it needs repair the right approach is lime-mortar repointing rather than hard cement, which can do more harm than good on old stone.
We repair and rebuild stone walls, repoint with lime where the building calls for it, and put dropped or bulging field walls back the way they should be. With 20+ years at this and full insurance, we're comfortable working on older limestone and we'll be straight with you about what a wall actually needs and what it doesn't.

Kimmage Hardware · Google reviewOlder Athboy limestone walls were built to breathe with lime mortar. Hard cement traps moisture and can crack the stone over time. Lime mortar flexes and lets the wall dry out, so on an old building it's usually the right choice and helps the stone last a lot longer.
Yes, that's common work around Athboy. We take down the loose or fallen section, sort the stone, and rebuild it to match the rest of the wall. Where we can we reuse the original stone so the repair blends in rather than standing out as a new patch.
That's the aim. We rake out the old failed mortar carefully and repoint with a lime mix and finish that suits the wall, so it looks right for its age. The goal is a sound, weathertight wall that still looks like the original, not a modern face.
